Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory

NCI provides an environment and facilities for basic and applied research, and has a long tradition of being part of workforce development, training, and education with our partners in academia.

NCI has hosted many faculty and student visitors; those collaborations have contributed to dozens of PhD and Masters degrees, including international degrees. A wide spectrum of formal and informal mechanisms are used to develop interactions and engagement. While US-government clearances are required to enter many of the NDC facilities, NCI also welcomes collaborations that do not require access to sensitive or classified data.

Undergraduate Students

At the undergraduate level, NCI hosts summer interns through a variety of formal sponsored programs. These include but are not exclusive to DOE's SULI program, Minority Serving Institution, and LLNL's Seaborg Institute. Additionally, we often employ undergraduates in a variety of part-time and academic year technical positions.

Graduate Students

NCI has facilitated diverse graduate student research (MS, PhD) projects. Historically, we have had an open door policy to hosting graduate student researchers to train them in sample preparation, data acquisition, NDC technology, instrumentation, and experimental design. Often these opportunities are ad-hoc and rely on the graduate student's advisor having a past relationship with NCI staff. Formal support of graduate student researchers includes collaborative extramurally funded research and LLNL's Livermore Graduate Scholar Program.

Post-doctoral Researchers

NCI sponsors post-doctoral researchers who have made a significant impact in various areas related to NDC. Post-doctoral researchers from other academic institutions and agencies outside NCI or LLNL also have access to NCI facilities and equipment. NCI staff actively mentor non-LLNL post-doctoral researchers while in residence and there is a formal collaboration between the supervising NCI staff scientist and the external mentor/sponsor.

Sabbatical Programs

NCI has hosted visiting professors and researchers who work in the NCI-related fields. Likewise, members of the NCI staff have been granted sabbaticals to partner institutions. Academic faculty who wish to spend time at NCI while on a sabbatical should contact the most appropriate NCI staff scientist within their appropriate discipline. General inquiries should be sent to the Karen Roland or to the Director of NCI.
